After a lengthy hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, concerts finally made a return to Perth with the Icehouse Great Southern Land Tour. Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of their iconic Aussie classic, Great Southern Land, the Perth event marked the start of their 2022 Australian Tour and the nationwide celebration of this definitive song.

Kings Park and Botanic Gardens was bathed in picture perfect autumn sunshine on the Anzac Day long weekend, welcoming thousands of concert goers.

The event opened with an amazing performance from ARIA nominated Indigenous Australian singer songwriter, Emily Wurramara. Her hypnotically beautiful voice and deeply meaningful lyrics melded perfectly with subtle acoustic guitar, paying tribute to the Indigenous culture and country she holds so close to her heart, with tracks including ‘Lady Blue’ and ‘Black Smoke’.

Playing their first home town show since 2019, Perth-based Jebediah, hit the stage with energy and enthusiasm. The joy of being back on stage was clearly evident, as the band never stopped grinning at each other over their flailing instruments, powerful vocals and sweat soaked shirts. The crowd was transported back in time, rocking out to timeless indie classics that shot Jebediah to stardom during the mid-1990’s. Their set list included tracks like ‘Leaving Home’, ‘Harpoon’ and ‘Teflon’.

Something For Kate hit the stage as the sunset over Kings Park. Their unmistakable euphonious tones together with gratingly melodic vocals reinforced why they have been a mainstay in the Australian alternative music scene for almost 20 years. Iconic tracks including ‘Monsters’ and ‘Electricity’ were intertwined beautifully into their set list which also included songs from their 2020 album release, The Modern Medieval and amazing covers of Taylor Swift’s, ‘Cardigan’ and David Bowie’s, ‘Heroes’.

The main event did not disappoint as Icehouse took to the stage with the same vigour they brought with them back in the 80’s. With the talented, Michael Paynter, missing from the line up due to a positive COVID-19 test, the rest of the band stepped up to deliver an unforgettable show. Iva Davies vocals together with Paul Gildea’s lead guitar were mesmerising. Drummer, Paul Wheeler, didn’t miss a beat, while the super skilled, Hugo Lee, transitioned effortlessly between saxophone and keyboards. Their set list was a collection of some of their most memorable hits including ‘Electric Blue’, ‘Crazy’, Hey Little Girl’, ‘My Obsession’ and of course ‘Great Southern Land’. The band took the opportunity to pay homage to two iconic Australian bands during their encore, playing covers of Midnight Oil’s, ‘Put Down That Weapon’ and The Angels, ‘Marseilles’.

Icehouse continue their Great Southern Land Tour in Toowoomba on May 7.
