Let’s start with something about you, where this adventure began, and the journey so far.
I’ve been singing and songwriting since I was in primary school so it’s been a loooong time. Around 5 or 6 years ago I got into writing for other artists as well as top lining (Toplining is essentially writing a vocal part over a pre-made music bed.) for DJs/producers. That allowed me to collaborate with so many different artists in genres I never thought I’d work in. It can be really stressful doing your own solo projects all the time so it was good to have a break from that and step out of my musical comfort zone. That gave me the time to find new inspiration and work on my own music from a different headspace without feeling so stressed about it. And here we are in 2020 and I’m feeling really good about the music I’ve got lined up :).

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with you and your music?
I really love 80s music, in particular Synth wave, so I try to have aspects of that come through in my production. I’d say dark/pop/synth wave is probably a good way to describe my music as a whole.

.

.

You have a very successful YouTube channel where you record covers of popular music. How do you decide which covers to tackle?
I always like the songs I post and I love doing covers of songs that have just come out, that way when I’m learning them I don’t really have all of the original artists adlibs etc. in my mind so I can make the song more my own. I get heaps of requests for songs too. That’s how the Korean covers started, I just had hundreds of comments asking me to sing BTS and I had no idea who they were but they had a new single coming out with Halsey so I gave it a try and it went viral haha. Korean is super hard though so those covers take a bit longer to learn.

Aside from making some incredible covers, you also write your own music. This March you are releasing your third single, ‘Atlas’ – was there something that inspired you to write the song?
Thank you! Absolutely, I was writing this piano instrumental and the line “I’m your world and you’re my Atlas” popped into my head. I love Greek mythology and decided to run with the idea.

When you started your YouTube channel, were you already writing your own music? Or did it inspire you to start?
I’ve been writing my own music since I was 12 and started Youtube when I was about 14/15. I did it (Youtube) for a few years but took a break while I worked on a bunch of different music projects. Then I noticed that I still had about 20k subscribers at the start of 2018 and figured I should probably get back into it and it’s grown to almost 400k. So I started out as a songwriter but Youtube has been an amazing way for people to find me through my covers and check out my original music.

.

.

What is the story or meaning behind the song? What might listeners take away from it?
So in this song “Atlas” is basically this guy who has been through the wars and is very cynical and wise to how the world works and the “world” is this sheltered, innocent girl who is naive to what goes on outside her bubble. Atlas learns from her that there is still light in the darkness which gives him hope and she learns that there is darkness beyond the light and becomes stronger/wiser because of it. So it’s kind of a metaphor for opening up and learning about someone else’s experiences and helping build them up and morph into a stronger person while they do the same for you, which I think is important in any relationship.

Will there be a music video to go with the song? Can you tell us anything about that?
Yes! I’m so excited! It’s coming out on March 13th which is the same day as the single. I directed and edited the video and my brother filmed it (He’s filmed my previous music videos too) and also helped with some editing too. It’s a really fun challenge to do everything yourself. I love the whole process of coming up with the ideas, sorting costume/makeup/hair, location scouting, shooting and editing. It’s stressful but I like learning how to do it all and making it all work more easily for the next one. I’m so pumped for everyone to see it.

.

.

What was it like to perform with Sunset Bros. last year?
It was amazing! I got the opportunity to sing with them at their sold out “We are Sunset” show at the Enmore Theatre as well as Festival X. They put on such a great show and the crowds are INSANE especially at Festival X – there were over 9000 people singing along which is such a crazy feeling.

What music did you listen to growing up? How has it influenced you?
My dad played a lot of music when I was little and he always got us to read the lyrics and listen to how the songs were written and appreciate that. We’d wake up to The Beatles, Crowded House, Michael Jackson, Elton John as well as musicals like Chess, Phantom of the Opera and heaps more blaring through the stereo on the weekends. It was awesome haha. Then I got into pop music as I grew up and loved all the late 90’s and early 2000’s singers like Britney, Xtina, Backstreet Boys, NSync Beyonce and Rihanna.
I think having my dad teach me to listen to how the songs were written made me hyper aware listening to music growing up and has really helped in my creative process.

Will you be touring more in the coming year? What’s next for you in 2020?
I have heaps of new music coming out this year of my own as well as collaborations with other artists. I’ll definitely be performing with a bunch of my collaborators and hopefully have some of my original shows happening too. It’s all currently in the works so just keep an eye on my socials to find out when/where I’ll be performing :).

.

.

Do you have any major long-term goals as a music artist and YouTuber?
I’d just really love to keep growing my online community and become a successful touring artist that people feel like they can connect with and want to listen to. I’d love for people to hear my music 10 years from now and specifically remember a time in their life that’s connected to one of my songs. I love when songs do that to me.
Outside of music one of my biggest passions is helping animals. I’d love to get to the stage with music that I can set up a little paradise for older animals that can’t be re-homed to live out their lives in happiness :).

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
The energy of the crowd and the rush of Adrenalin you get when you step on a stage. You get instant feedback from people in the audience and it’s a feeling you can’t get anywhere else. It’s also incredible when the crowd is singing a song you’ve written back to you.

About ‘Atlas’:

How much do we give of ourselves in the pursuit of true love? How much do we hold on to? On her forthcoming single ‘Atlas,’ Australian supernova Bianca answers this through a combination of sincere lyrics and empathetic harmonies over a progressive haunting melody, that conjures up visions of a sparrow ready to burst free from its cage.  We begin in a place of self-realisation, that the safe space she keeps her heart enclosed in is an obstacle, a crutch. Bianca knows what her heart desires, will come at a price, and that cost is the breaking apart of all preconceptions of emotional security.  The song builds with this understanding and clarity manifests in awareness that the darkness in this desire, isn’t a barrier to avoid, but to embrace.  Only by confronting her spiritual antithesis is Bianca able to access a portal into feeling complete and the lessons learned from another’s experience.  This can form the foundation of an authentic relationship, where giving yourself over to another, is a blessing and never a weakness.  The chorus quintessentially sums this up: “…you hold me in the sky / I’m your world and you’re my Atlas..” Bianca has willingly leapt from the precipice of the unknown.  Salvation awaits at the bottom, arms open, ready to catch her.
