For any new fans, how did it all begin? Where did you develop your interest in performing music to an audience?
We’ve all been mates since we were knee high, so we’d known each other for years before deciding to start a band. We all sort of got into death metal around the same time, so we shared a lot of music we found with each other. Living in a small country town, there was never too much entertainment, so we always had to make our own. After starting the band and writing some songs, we started to play our first small club shows in Brisbane. We were all super young and just excited to be doing something different that we enjoyed. Ever since that point, we just felt the need to keep on keepin’ on.

Playing such a heavy genre, what kind of music did you grow up on? Which artists inspired you?
Well I started with all the classics like Metallica and Testament, then once I started discovering heavier bands like Kreator and Cannibal Corpse, I was hooked on death metal. Bands like Disgorge, Brodequin and Internal Suffering were probably my biggest influences as a teen. It was a breath of fresh air to hear music so suffocating.

Describe what is unique about your performance? Why would fans be attracted to your music?
We’re not the sort of band to pull out too many bells & whistles live. We just try to replicate the sound of the album as accurately as possible. I think that’s something people appreciate when they see a band live and take home the album and it sounds like what they just heard. Our production is somewhat unconventional for modern death metal, so that can be something that sticks out.

Brutal Death Metal sounds so dark. Does that ‘heaviness’ reflect your lives in general?
Haha, definitely not! We’re constantly laughing whenever we’re together. We all lead extremely normal lives at home. I think the imagery in brutal death metal is just a reflection of the intesity of the music. This scene has some of the most genuine guys and gals I’ve ever met.

You have just signed with Unique Leader Records and EVP Recordings. Congratulations. Always exciting to sign new deals. How do you feel these new relationships will improve your outcomes?
Having the album available to as many people as possible will hopefully lead to more people hearing the band. Some bands are able to create a sizeable following independently, but with the amount of bands and information on the internet, it makes it difficult really stand out. I think the more a band is focusing on the business aspects, the less energy goes into writing the music.

Your new album “The Decaying Light” will be out July 12th. Can you describe its origin and evolution?
We started writing straight after releasing our second album ‘Misery’. We had a pretty clear vision when writing that album, and it just felt like a natural progression when writing songs for TDL. All we try to do is write music that we like listening to and playing. Not much else influences our songwriting, so we don’t feel like its necessary to strictly adhere to any typical definitions of a brutal death metal band.

What are the signature tracks for you, and which song is your favourite and why?
For me, I’d say Undying Dysphoria, Dismal Liturgies and the title track, because the riffs are a bunch o’ fun to play.

Does song writing come easily to you or is it a “right place, right time” process?
We’re not the sort of band to write new material while on tour. A lot of thought goes into our songwriting and composition, so we’ve never really thrown some riffs together for a song. Home is usually where all the best ideas appear musically for me.

You have your “Bloodletting Tour” of North America coming up. What are you looking forward to most? What can the fans expect?
The entire thing! We always have a great time over in the states. I’m just looking forward to the grind of being on tour again. Headlining gives us a bit more time to play with, so it’ll be quite a varied set.

If you could pick absolutely anyone to bring on tour with you, whom would you pick and why? (Dead or Alive)
My brother, Jared. Because he’s a animal on the sauce.

What are your major goals or milestones for the future?
I don’t really have major goals that I’m trying to aspire to. I’m just living for the now and having fun while doing it.
