After an 8-year stint in Los Angeles, California, Jess Macc has returned to her native Sydney to do what she’s always had the greatest passion for – music. During her time in the US, she had the opportunity to work as a photographer, shooting in a variety of settings including fashion, sports and music.

Macc also co-founded a non-profit whose goal was to raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigma and provide resources to those who are suffering. It was at this time she tapped into her deep well of creativity to support the work she was doing, starting and developing her own jewellery and accessory brand.

Though her creative ventures never took her down the path of music as a career, there remained within her a deep yearning to return to what she wanted to do the most, to her first love. Over the years and through her journeys she would find herself writing and playing through the ups and the downs, dreaming of a day when she’d be able to put it all together and record.

.

.

This past year Macc decided it was time to come home to Australia, to return to her roots and to roll up her sleeves and get back to work as an artist. And as it turns out her sense of timing couldn’t have been better with all we’re seeing in the world of 2020.

Since getting back, Macc has hit the ground running. She quickly fused her photography and media experience with her desire to record music, connecting with A Sharp Recording Studio in Sydney where she’s had the opportunity to dive into studio life with the man they call “Big Brain” – producer Daniel Natoli.

“There’s absolutely nothing like returning home after being away for so long and jumping into the studio with a dream producer.”

Her debut single is called, WIN SOME, LOSE SOME, which is a melodic and heart-wrenching adaptation of a messy situation – an addiction. It’s a repeat offence that’s too good to give up but that isn’t enough to keep either. It’s also about wanting what you can’t have – when you can’t have it, you want it more. You can’t win them all.

Here’s a little sneak peek at some of the lyrics from Macc’s single :

“We are the game I played

To get me through the day

I didn’t think that I would wanna stay”

The song showcases not only the singer-songwriter’s complexity as a person but you also can’t help but get a sense of the depth of her creative influences as well. Jess credits much of that inspiration to a wide range of genres both in music and in life, including her travels and adventures as a photographer.

The extent of her creativity and flair is perhaps at it’s zenith in the Win Some, Lose Some music video that is sure to blow your mind with it’s seriously tasty visual-candy. It’s set in a retro-style loft apartment in the heart of hip and historic downtown Los Angeles (DTLA). Macc takes us on a lyrical journey of agony and frustration, while also telling the story in an aesthetically captivating array of vintage-inspired looks. Playing a beautiful bright-white Gretsch guitar, Jess goes from the couch to the bed and finally the floor – charismatically locking eyes with the camera, ensuring you won’t dare look away, not even for a second.

Jess, who has long been an advocate of gender equality, decided that if this was going to happen, she would team up with women in the film industry to tell the story. And that’s exactly what she did in choosing badass industry pros, Rachel Bickert (cinematographer) and Lauren Meyering (director) to help her conjure up cinematic magic.

If there’s one thing that gets to the heart of who this artist is, it’s that she’s someone who says what she means and means what she says. As it so happens, it’s also the key to what makes this new track super refreshing. That being said, don’t take my word for it. Take a listen and see for yourself. You won’t regret it.

“There’s no fixing what you did to me,

I still smell whiskey and feel you kiss my knee..”
