At 13 Kate Bush penned the stirring “Man With The Child In Her Eyes”, at 16 she recorded it. “Be There”, Justina Ward’s new single shares a similar tale, having written the song at the age of 13 after the devastating passing of her stepsister and releasing it as her new single now for the world to hear.

“The song is very special to me. Revisiting how I was trying to understand grief as a child has been quite confronting.”

There are some similarities between Bush and Ward. Much like the British singer, Ward’s unique approach to melodic folk indie and chamber pop has garnered her a swell of fans who are captivated by her ethereal and emotional songwriting. “Be There” is a powerful song that swirls around Ward’s childhood experience of dealing with loss, grief and heartbreak on a monumental level. Stripped bare with just strings, piano and Ward’s unwavering voice, the song pulses with a delicate tension that feels like it could so easily tear apart like gossamer wings. The vulnerability of “Be There” is visceral but holding it all together is Ward’s voice. She sings the words penned by her young self and the lyrics drip with confusion and anguish but the way she sings shows a woman who has made it to the other side with indefinable strength.

The emotional intensity of the song is reminiscent of the works of Florence + The Machine and London Grammar. And despite the confusion and quiet turmoil “Be There” lays bare Ward’s resilience with a song that pacifies too in a surprisingly comforting way. Pushing the boundaries of preconceived notions of indie, neo-folk, chamber pop shows that Ward is an artist who is intrigued by upending conventions to create a unique sound identifiable her own. By releasing “Be There”, Ward has shown us her most vulnerable, an artist who is unafraid or at least swallows the fear, in the pursuit to produce music that rises above the fray.
