Brisbane based indie rock band ‘High Tropics‘ have just released their second single for the year ‘Wait for You‘. It’s the perfect, angsty garage band anthem for anyone who’s feeling a little sorry for themselves. Lucky for us, we have the chance to hear this track alongside the rest of their discography at their very first Melbourne show as well as Brisbane and Sydney shows! For more info, check out our chat with Josh below!

Hi Josh, how are you? The last time we spoke you were yet to release ‘Wait for You’ – great song by the way, maybe even my favourite of yours so far! How has the reception towards the song been?

.

Hey Jem, I am great thank you – hope you are too! Ah, that’s so nice of you to say! People seem to be digging it, so I’m pretty stoked. The support from Apple Music & Spotify has also helped a lot, so I guess I’m just grateful if anything.

.

The song was produced by Elliot Heinrich (Pop Cult, Tempesst) and mastered by Brian Lucey (Liam Gallagher, Royal Blood). What was it like working with Elliot and Brian who have worked with such iconic artists?

Well I’m really lucky that Elliot lives in the same town as me, the fact that I don’t have to travel very far to get top tier production just makes life a lot less stressful. With Brian, that was the first time I’d worked with him, Elliot actually made the recommendation, I’m pretty happy with the final result!

.

Do you plan to work together in the future?

I’ve actually just finished up another song with Elliot, about to send it off to Brian to work his magic this week!

.

I know you don’t usually expand to much about the meaning behind your songs but ‘Wait for You’ has aN important underlying message. Would you mind explaining that message a little bit?

Sure, so ‘Wait for You’ is about patience and perseverance. For me personally, the song was a cathartic release from the ups and downs of living with an autoimmune disease for the last couple of years. Sonically, the verse and chorus chord progressions kind of play off each other with a minor to major resolve, which works well with the lyrical content.

.

Last time we spoke you also mentioned that you were working on an EP! How is that coming along? Any potential release date? What can we expect from the EP?

There’s probably enough finished songs banked up for an EP, no release date yet though, but it’s coming!

You guys have been playing some live shows. Has that influenced the way you write at all? Or do you just write what comes naturally and work out the live arrangement at a later date?

Slightly… there are some songs played differently live, but typically I tend to write while I’m recording… I feel like when you write songs in the rehearsal room it can be a little deceptive. You might be singing something that sounds great through a P.A but when you go to record it the melody just doesn’t sit right.

.

Speaking of live shows, you have a couple coming up! I’ll be heading along to the free Melbourne gig! What can us punters expect? Will you be road testing any new material?

It’ll be HT’s first appearance in Melb so expect us to be grinning cheek-to-cheek with excitement… and yes we will indeed be road testing new material!

.

You sometimes like to sneak in a cover. Can we expect one? If so, what are your favourite songs to cover?

We haven’t for a while, if we do it’ll be a spontaneous decision, but I don’t want to spoil it for you if you’re coming along!

.

Lastly just for fun, what would be your dream venue or location to play a gig?

Glasto 2020, (if said booker ever ends up reading this, make this kids dream come true and lock us in eh)! OR likewise, if you’re a fan with too much time on your hands and want to help set up a campaign to get us over there). ((We’ll take you with us..!)).

.

Challenge accepted, Glasto 2020 lets go boys!
