With a whole bunch of artists, including Bootleg Rascal and Gold Member, Rare Finds took to Oxford Arts on the 21st of April to celebrate their third birthday.
First up in the Gallery Bar to start off the night was two piece from Melbourne, Sophisticated Dingo. Their rocky vibes with new single ‘Yuppies’ gave the early crowd something to talk about over drinks.

Next up at the main stage was band Approachable Members of Your Local Community. Sporting matching Adidas blue outfits, the 7 piece band introduced us to their groovy tunes, such as ‘Fuck You I Love You’, ‘Velcro’, and crowd favourites ‘Semiotic Vision’ and ‘Millennium Queen’, that saw the crowd dancing by all means. I hadn’t heard of Approachable Members before this night but I’m so glad I found them. A sax, trumpet, two guitars, bass, drums, and keys, paired with the banter onstage by the guys called for a set that was nothing short of memorable over the course of the night.

Melbourne band Halcyon Drive next took to the main stage, thrashing about, with songs such as ‘Books for the Holidays’ and ‘Crusoe’. Thriving rhythms and melodies showed off a chasm of chaos (the good kind), warming up the quickly building crowd for Gold Member and Bootleg Rascal.
Gold Member soon jumped onto the stage, erupting with energy as per usual. ‘Wild Stories’ and ‘X’ accompanied crashing riffs and punchy drums with relatable lyricism. Gold Member no doubt always put on a great show, and this was no exception. ‘Stick the Moon’ and ‘Poppin’ gave off electro-funk vibes and saw arms of the crowd flowing round throughout.
At just after 11:30, Bootleg Rascal were welcomed onto the main stage with a drawn back curtain, the crowd erupted with cheers, with track ‘Head In The Clouds’ immediately driving movement across the room. As bodies jumped throughout the room, ‘Sharks’ mellowed the crowd, yet not breaking the flow of movement amongst the fog and bright lights.
‘Bones n Bricks’ was accompanied like most of the songs, with more guitar than the recording, putting an upbeat tone on the beginning of songs usually more settled. With arms moving in unison, the crowd followed receptively the transition into ‘Asleep In The Machine’.
New song ‘Mercy’ that was finished the week before the gig was received well by the crowd, with gospel undertones and strong vocals, the atmosphere in the room lifted once more.
‘Overflow’ and ‘Coming Home’ set off feelings of nostalgia and remembrance, as the set began to close. For the encore, the Sydney group sang a new song due to be released in a couple of weeks, aided by an acoustic guitar and lively drums.

Ending the long night in the Gallery Bar were Bondi duo Aikonawena, who after seeing them for a second time, did not disappoint. The electronic duo graced the lasting crowd with new single ‘Guard Down’, and songs ‘Satisfied’ and ‘Covering Me’. Though coming on to finish the evening at just after 1am, Aikonawena’s groove-filled tunes emitted nothing but feelings of happiness and energy.
