French duo Saavan are excited to unveil today their poignant sophomore EP ‘Observatory’ – written and produced by the band themselves.

‘Observatory’ is five tracks of brooding electronica, filled to the brim with expansive soundscapes.

Saavan talks about the inspiration behind ‘Observatory’: “’Observatory’ by virtue is the sentiment of every starting point of each song: it is a moment to stop and take a step back from the real world, allowing us to see the big picture. The guiding thread throughout the album is a bittersweet observation of our way to consider our existence, the urge to stop following, the need to seek for something new in a world distracted from all sides, the hope that a new way to think, and to live, will triumph over our current existence.”

Opener ‘Holy Savages’ is layered with percussive and earthy samples, complementing sweeping builds into a luminous multicoloured bridge. Leading into latest single ‘Young Minds’, which presents an overwhelming sense of foreboding, taking cues from contemporaries Foals, alt-j and Bonobo.

The lead synth samples for third track ‘Remember’ provides the focal point for the song, as the rest of the instrumentation intertwine around it, before its residual ending. Shimmering brass samples and mechanic claps explode in the chorus of ‘Time’, reverbing across gong-like kick drums. Lastly, ‘In My Head’ is a feast of stop-start beats and haunting vocals, reflecting electronic influencers like Nicolas Jaar.

Saavan have performed extensively across France, collaborating and touring alongside the likes of Petit Biscuit, Fakear, Møme and Marian Hill. Their releases have garnered over 13.5 million plays on Spotify and 3.7 million views across YouTube. The duo are currently working on a five-record project between 2019 and 2021, to unleash its unique story around their clear vision: make people change their view of the world.

Saavan is composed of artists Lucas Mokrani and Claire Lengaigne, with each also working outside music. Lucas is a film director under the moniker MESKA, working on music videos for the likes of Odesza, while Claire spends time as a physiotherapist.

SAAVAN want to invite people into their observatory, to open the doors of perception.
