New Zealand-based indie/rock/pop outfit Summer Thieves announce the release of their second album, Paradise Down The Road. Across 10 tracks, the band effortlessly move across all aspects of their sound, creating an album which shows a maturation in the Dunedin-bred party starters.
Featuring a range of tracks honed both in studio and across festivals over the past 12 months, Paradise Down The Road sees them pushing their sound into new and different spaces, all the while maintaining the energy that has earned them an ever-growing following.
Written and recorded across multiple lockdowns and quiet periods, the album shows two different emotional sides – one deep & contemplative (written during lockdown), and the other more hopeful & celebratory (written in between lockdowns). Bringing together elements of pop, rock, blues, indie & even tinges of hip-hop & gospel, these eclectic sounds & influences all combine to create a sound hard to pin down to one genre, but instantly recognisable as that of Summer Thieves.
The album opens with ‘Pages’, a track that brings reggae-inspired drums alongside driving bass and guitars interweaving through the track. The track sets the tone for the album – “just ride the wave, see where it takes you”. There is always light at the end of the tunnel, and a Paradise Down The Road. ‘Saturday Night’ continues the bass-driven trend, with an instantly-memorable bassline combining with jangling guitars. Both tracks showcase the expanded sound of Summer Thieves, as ‘Potions’ brings the softer side of the album to the front, while maintaining another chorus tailor-made for the live stage.
‘All For You’, ‘Is It Really Over?’ & ‘Stuck On You’ all showcase the maturing side of Summer Thieves’ sound, not afraid to slow things down, but still incorporating soaring guitars & group vocals. ‘Paper Tiger’ takes the album on a left turn down the rabbit hole, with a style & vocals inspired by Britpop & nights out with tongue firmly in cheek.
‘Broken Home’ brings the ballad-style driven by frontman Jake Barton’s inspired and emotional vocals, while ‘Floating Away’ shows a vulnerable & quieter side of Summer Thieves. The album closes with ‘Three Brothers’, a track dedicated to those lost close to the band, bringing the album to an emotional & musical climax.
Paradise Down The Road features the band taking the wheel of their sound, and driving into new & interesting terrain. Featuring production from Matt Sadgrove (Sons of Zion, Stan Walker) & Tiki Taane (Shapeshifter, Salmonella Dub), alongside co-writes with Brad Kora & Joel Shadbolt (L.A.B), the album is driven by frontman Jake Barton, with his unmistakable vocals & fingerprints all over each track.
With their eyes set on expanding both their sound and audience beyond Aotearoa, Paradise Down The Road sees Summer Thieves finally coming into their own, becoming more comfortable in their expanding sound.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
