SASKWATCH, THE BAMBOOS, HOT POTATO BAND and more!

Sunset Sounds returns in 2018 with a huge line up of free gigs across the City’s beautiful parks and gardens, featuring Saskwatch, The Bamboos, Hot Potato Band, Alexander Biggs, Jazz Party and 30/70. The three free concerts in January, will also welcome a number of Melbourne’s favourite food trucks.

City of Stonnington Mayor Cr Steve Stefanopoulos said the annual free concert series showcases some of Australia’s best emerging talent and established performers in celebration of summer in our City.

“Stonnington has some of the most sensational parks and gardens, and it brings me great joy to see residents and visitors enjoying them” Mayor Stefanopoulos said.

“Pack a picnic basket, and your dancing shoes, and head down for a summers afternoon with some of Australia’s finest talent.”

Kicking off the series on Sunday 7 January will be local six-piece soul outfit, Saskwatch who will serenade the Victoria Gardens, Prahran with their vulnerable yet playful sound. Their fourth studio album Manual Override saw Saskwatch put their twist on contemporary indie-pop, which in combination with their signature horn-heavy soul sound, created a body of work widely acclaimed by fans.

Supporting Saskwatch will be the emotionally tuned, philosophically grounded and melodically captivating Alexander Biggs. The 23 year old just capped off a whirlwind 2017 which saw the release of his debut EP, Still You Sharpen Your Teeth and Rolling Stone magazine labelled him one to watch in their Future Is Now feature.

The second edition of the series, on Sunday 14 January in Central Park, Malvern East, will see a performance from eight-piece powerhouse The Bamboos, who have continually redefined Australian soul music with their unmatched musical evolution. With an impressive five ARIA awards under their belt, The Bamboos are continually ranked among the countries best live bands, perfectly weaving nostalgic influences, embracing new sounds to create a truly unique and enthralling experience. The Bamboos will be joined by the charming and captivating Jazz Party. Self-described ‘dirty beatnik rock ‘n’ roll band who play jazz and soul music’, the ensemble’s dance freak-outs, are an ode to the rhythm ‘n’ blues of New Orleans’ days past.

Rounding out this year’s Sunset Sounds on Sunday 21 January in the Malvern Gardens, is 11-piece group Hot Potato Band, whose unique blend of ska, blues, funk and reggae has given them a significantly distinguishable sound. Having performed at large festivals and street corners alike, Hot Potato Band bring an energy and interaction to every performance that has made them one of the most celebrated stage performing bands in Australia. Joining them are the latest buzz act out of Melbourne, 30/70. Lovingly referred to as a community rather than a band, 30/70’s cosmic mélange of boom-bap dynamics, neo-soul harmonies and jazz-funk licks, all tied together by front woman Allysha Joy’s husky vocal tone, has made them a must have edition to any festival line-up.
