Announce
DARKROOM RECHARGED TOUR
for MAY/JUNE 2021

The Angels – comprised of founding members John and Rick Brewster, singer Dave Gleeson, drummer Nick Norton, and John’s son, Sam, on bass – return in 2020 with the release today of Darkroom Recharged.  It is a new version of their classic album Darkroom, completely re-recorded with Dave Gleeson on vocals.  This “recharged” double version also features the full record as a live album, recorded at the Bridge Hotel in Sydney.  Fans will be familiar with the concept, this new release following on from Face to Face Recharged and No Exit Recharged.

The album release will be followed in 2021 by the Darkroom Recharged Tour, a four to the floor rock show in the great tradition of Aussie pubs and clubs.  It will run from April 30, kicking off at Sydney’s Bridge Hotel, before taking in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, then winding up at Sydney’s Juniors on June 18 and the Doylo, in Doyalson, NSW on June 19.

Rick Brewster said, “We are very excited to have re-recorded Darkroom with Dave Gleeson, Sam and Nick, and to release it today. Darkroom has always been a very special album for us, marking the time when we left Alberts and toured America and Europe. It completes the Face to Face/No Exit/Darkroom Trilogy, recorded both in the Studio and Live, with bonus tracks and the occasional change from the original recordings. And we’re finally taking it out on tour in 2021. Can’t wait to change the rusty strings, shake off the Cabin Fever and hit the road again!”

John Brewster said “The Angels have a long history that we can be proud of, as we are every member that’s played in the band over the years. These days we continue to write and record new songs, and with Dave Gleeson, Sam Brewster and Nick Norton it’s great to revisit the Darkroom album, one of my favourites.”

About THE ANGELS

Growing up in Newcastle, Dave Gleeson – who later formed The Screaming Jets – loved The Angels.

“Their songs from the late ’70s and early ’80s are more ingrained in me than even Jets songs, because they’ve been with me since I was 12 or 13 years old.”

When Dave rocked up to a Brewster Brothers gig in the Adelaide Hills in 2011, they asked him what Angels songs he knew. “All of them,” he replied. After Dave joined them on stage, John and Rick knew they had found their new lead singer. Dave was initially reluctant, due to his reverence for Doc, but he couldn’t resist joining his favourite band.

“I’m definitely respectful of the fact that I’m not the creator of the Angels’ sound,” Dave says. “And I’m mindful of bringing that energy that Doc brought to the band. But it’s a real treat for me to be up there blasting out songs that I’ve loved since I was a kid.”

The Angels’ long-time booking agent, Tony Grace, says adding Dave to the band was a masterstroke. “You couldn’t write a better script. I held in high regard what Doc did in his generation … but Dave Gleeson was the best of the best in the current crop. He is what rock ’n’ roll and Australian pub rock stands for.”

More than four decades into their remarkable journey, The Angels remain fierce and uncompromising. They have always done things their own way. As rock historian Ian McFarlane notes,

“The Angels were often seen as a punk/new wave outfit, yet the high-energy sound, powerful guitar riffing and muscular yet supple rhythm section took the band beyond such easy categorisations.”
