Thelma Plum has announced her debut album Better In Blak is set for release on Friday July 12th and is available to pre order now. Some 2 years in the making and recorded across New York, London and Sydney with frequent collaborator, producer Alex Burnett (Anthony & Cleopatra, Sparkadia), Better In Blak is 12 tracks of Thelma at her best; brutally honest, with her heart on her sleeve and emotions ranging from laugh-out-loud self-effacing jibes to brutal and sometimes bleak self-reflection, it’s an inside look at the Gamilaraay musician’s life.

The album announce is complemented by the official video for title track, Better In Blak, directed by frequent collaborator Claudia Sangiorgi Dallimore (Her Sound, Her Story, Mojo Juju) and features a cast of Thelma’s contemporaries  and family in a highly stylized retro feeling celebration of race and gender – watch the video here.

“This is the third video I’ve made with Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore and I love working with her. She makes the space feel safe so it’s a very comfortable process to make art with her. It’s been great building that relationship with her over all of the videos for this album but what’s most important to me is the fact I got to work with Indigenous women that I have looked up to for a long time and that this video reunited me with my sisters. It’s the first time we’ve all been together in the one room – I’ll never forget how special that felt”.

Of her debut record, Thelma comments “This album reflects some pretty dark times in my life but these songs kind of  helped pull me out of it, it’s cathartic in a weird way. I’m excited for people to hear these songs but some of them come from grim places, so it’s a bit daunting having them see the light of day. There’s some funny stuff on there, too, it’s not all doom and gloom!”

Dave Le’Aupepe from Gang of Youths’ and a co-write from Paul Kelly are both featured on the record.

Better In Blak is a long time coming. Debuting in 2012 with Father Said, Thelma Plum followed up with the still-selling Rosie EP in 2014 before signing to Warner and releasing the highly lauded Monsters EP (which featured production by Grammy and ARIA winning producer M-Phazes). She has collaborated with Golden Features on the ARIA Gold track No One (2015) and ICU with AB Original (2016) and most recently toured and performed nationally as part of the Groovin’ The Moo festival and will be performing on Friday 19th July at Splendour In The Grass on the GW McLennan stage.

The album is a shot in the arm for Australian music, with synth bops (Woke Blokes), pop steppers (Not Angry Anymore) and some beautifully minimal moments (the one-take voice and guitar gut-wrencher Do You Ever Get So Sad You Can’t Breathe). Plum moves effortlessly between the anthemic (Don’t Let A Good Girl Down) and the slightly lighter (Nick Cave) and the Hottest 100 #79 and ARIA Gold Clumsy Love), it’s a wide sonic palette that just works and will solidify Plum as one of the country’s brightest song writing talents.

Today, Thelma Plum has also announced her national Better In Blak headline tour, presented by triple j and taking in most of the country in August 2019. Tickets are on sale now.
