Singer songwriter William Crighton has today released his highly anticipated third album Water and Dust (ABC Music), and early critical acclaim suggests it may well be regarded as his finest yet.

Hand in hand with the album release comes the single and video Stand. Recorded at Jim Moginie’s Northern Beaches, Sydney studio, Midnight Oil band mate Rob Hirst was on drums as Crighton mentioned one line he had: “Don’t stand on the side of the one who is blinding you.” Hirst suggested the next line, “Stand with the one who is kind to you”, and they were away.

“Stand is bristling with fresh song, first take, all together-in-the-studio energy: we slammed it down with joy and without overthought – big fun was had by all,” said Rob Hirst

Julieanne Crighton’s vocals help the song soar, and the result is a pulsing rock tune that, unsurprisingly, has the kind of power and exuberance that is also the hallmark of Jim and Rob’s band.

“If a song has spirit then other musicians feed on that and the song takes on a life of its own each time you play it” Crighton says. “If the musicians don’t get it, then who is going to get it? I put a lot of faith in having the right people in the room and trusting their contributions.”

Discussing the direction for the video, Crighton explains, ‘We wanted to capture the live energy of this song in a simple way and let the song tell the story. It was a lot of fun to make and some great work by the crew and Josh Bruce who produced and directed it.”

Crighton’s album Water and Dust is a musical exploration that travels deep into the heart of Australia. The terrain, the people, the raw beauty, the danger, the echoes of the past and the hopes for the future, it’s all there. In this music, the country feels so close you can almost taste it.

Water and Dust features first single Your Country, alongside further singles This Is Magic, The Wheel, and Keep Facing The Sunshine.

“I like to think that all of these songs on Water and Dust have hope in them,” Crighton says. “That country where we recorded Keep Facing the Sunshine has a gentle and powerful nature that seemed to keep the darkness at bay. The people who have influenced me most are often the people who have been through real trauma and still manage to be grateful for the wonder of life. Even when something terrible happens you can usually still find a way to be grateful for the lesson.”
