ARIA double-platinum six-piece act, Winston Surfshirt, teams up with 4x ARIA-Award winning artist, Genesis Owusu to share a new single oozing with euphoric funk, “There’s Only One” out today via Sweat It Out & BMG.

A buttery smooth slab of hybrid rap and disco, today’s track glistens in all the right places. Designed for a balmy summer’s evening, “There’s Only One” is made unique by the combination of Winston’s trademark falsetto coos, and Owusu’s deep, sung-spoken verses. Courtesy of the rest of the band, chiming percussion, dabs of brass and a crisp backbeat score a love song that’s unforgettable in its irresistible charm.

Winston says on the new single: “I started the beat pre-covid in London with Julio, Bustlip & Loxe & instantly fell in love with it. Hearing the intro takes me straight back to walking through London blasting the beat in my headphones before the world shut down. Back in Sydney during lockdown we turned it into a song. For a feature our first thought was Genesis, we’ve known him for a while now and always wanted to work with him. The timing was right, so we sent him the tune and he sent a verse and bridge back a day later. No need for any changes, it was perfection.”

Genesis continues: “Winston and I did this track a while ago, glad it’s seeing the light of day. Super smooth and summery. Hope my girlfriend likes my verse.” “There’s Only One” follows on from the six-piece’s prior collaborative single with Young Franco, “Complicated”, which earlier this year received an energetic remix from Flava D. Like its predecessor, “All Of The Little Things” featuring California based rapper Ramirez, both tracks scored acclaim from national tastemakers, triple j and community radio. The new music has been a welcome return for fans, who lapped up the band’s Cover Your Mouth (Live From Lockdown) EP, released last year in March. The band’s journey in 2019 included their eagerly awaited sophomore album Apple Crumble receiving rave reviews, and performing a show-stopping headline set at Splendour In The Grass that achieved immortality via triple j’s Live At The Wireless. Cue 2020, frontman Winston, welcomed the arrival of his first child, and a collaboration with friend Angus Stone on the Dope Lemon track “Every Day Is A Holiday”.

Winston Surfshirt initially began as the solo project of the eponymous frontman, singer, producer and rapper, before organically calling upon some of his closest friends and other local artists to become the globally cherished musical collective they are today. The band’s cult following is reaffirmed with every impeccably tight and equally raucous live show, as the lines between funk, soul and hip-hop blur seamlessly. From their stellar 2017 debut and triple j Feature Album, Sponge Cake to present day, the band have garnered wide-spread praise from international figures including Beats 1 host Zane Lowe, Sir Elton John, Jason Bentley (KCRW), Huw Stephens, Phil Taggart (BBC Radio 1), and Lauren Laverne (BBC Radio 6). Their festival billings continue to climb, as the world aims to resume and add to a list that includes Splendour In The Grass, Spilt Milk, Falls Festival, Field Day, Yours & Owls and sold-out British & European shows all over.

Equally indefinable by genre or style, guest artist Genesis Owusu saw his breakout year in 2021 with debut album, Smiling With No Teeth, securing triple j’s Album of the Year and x4 ARIA award titles, radio support from triple j and BBC Radio, plus global acclaim from tastemakers and critics alike, including The Needle Drop, NME, Line of Best Fit, The Guardian, Teen Vogue, Rolling Stone, The Australian, ICON and many more. Owusu next embarks on tours across Australia and North America in 2022.

Now, as one of Australia’s most loved bands continues their vision for doing everything with feeling – from funked-up slow jams to singalong festival anthems – be assured that today’s newest heater with 2021 icon Genesis Owusu slides into the latter category perfectly.
