Introducing Nyassa, the Adelaide-based singer and songwriter who today shares her debut single ‘Ghost’ (out through Daisy Cutter Records/ Island Records Australia).

Against an unassuming electronic backdrop, ‘Ghost’ is one of those magic songs that came to Nyassa and co-writer, Telenova’s Edward Quinn, so swiftly that it almost wrote itself. Receiving its First Play on triple j’s Home & Hosed, the haunting song journeys deep into the musician’s emotional life, as well as showcases her incredible vocal range and expression.

“Making music feels like being in love – you’re in another world, a beautiful one,” says Nyassa. “I want to make people feel something that they can’t explain… I naturally put a piece of my soul into my songs”.

Accompanying today’s release is the official music video. Driven by Nyassa’s creative vision, the clip is directed by Richy Sandham with cinematography by Nick Stevens.

Filmed at South Australia’s historic Martindale Hall (famous as the mansion setting of the classic film Picnic at Hanging Rock) and Mintaro Maze, the cinematic clip blends the location’s picturesque Georgian stylings with Nyassa’s distinctive costuming, exploring the striking artist’s unique aesthetic.

Nyassa finds inspiration from 80’s and 90’s Couture Runways and the iconography the 80’s era holds. “There’s just something so bold about wearing shoulder pads – I feel as if they hold a power.” From a young age she was cutting up outfits and creating her own look. “I didn’t care what everyone else was wearing, it was more important for me to wear what I loved, no matter how different I looked.”

Daring headpieces show her uniqueness for avant-garde fashion and art. A teapot and a lampshade – sit alongside more traditional costumes such as her mum’s bridal gown in the video clip. Iconic cube headpieces, inspired by a 1988 Yves Saint Laurent ‘Naomi Campbell’ ad make up some of the eccentric wardrobe pieces designed by Nyassa, then handmade by her mum. “I’m drawn to fashion that looks like art. I love having no boundaries when designing,” she says.

In pursuit of artistic fashion, Nyassa often flips vintage pieces, wearing them back to front or re-configuring them. Fashion is as much a part of Nyassa’s artistry and soul as her music and songs are, showing her passion for couture and her clear-eyed creative vision to build a pop persona as big as her voice.

While Nyassa has a hand in many aspects of her artistic world, she loves the creative flow of a collaborative studio session. “I love the energy that bounces around the studio when you’re collaborating with someone. But when it’s just me in my bedroom with my mic set up in my closet, that’s also really special. It’s possibly my safest spot where I feel like I can be me because no one is watching.”

This dedication to her craft has grown into an impressive vocal range, and a love for making music that evokes in listeners an indescribable feeling, as she puts her whole self into this pursuit.

The strength of her talent speaks for itself and has led her to working with fellow Adelaideans and Hip Hop royalty, Hilltop Hoods. Nyassa provided guest vocals on their Great Expanse album and headed out on the road with them as their live singer for their 2019 Arena tour and most recently their Show Business Tour (2022).

With ‘Ghost’, Nyassa makes an impassioned, confident statement of self, proclaiming the infiniteness of her love. It’s a stunning introduction to a bold talent, and the first taste of an enigmatic new sound.
