Australian rock royalty Spiderbait are back with their first new music since 2013 with the release of the double single ‘My Car’s A UFO’ & ‘Riffer’. These singles are the first taste of a new compilation record, called ‘Sounds In The Key Of J’, that celebrates the legacy of their pioneering bassist and singer, Janet English. Fans can pre-order the record here, which will release on April 8th.

The new single is a previously unreleased track from the band’s extensive catalogue, which the band had forgotten existed until Kram found a CD of lost mixes from their 2001 record, ‘The Flight Of Wally Funk’.

“I wanted to put everything of Janet’s on the album that we could fit onto a double album, including B-Sides and any lost tracks. UFO had been mixed but for some reason, it didn’t make Wally Funk and was never mastered”, Kram said of UFO.

“When we found it, we decided we should include it on Sounds In The Key Of J. It’s weird to hear something from your past come out in the present and, strangely, fate was kind to us in that we didn’t release it back in the day so it could be heard for the first time now”. On the B-Side, Kram said that; “Riffer was recorded in Whitt’s home studio and represents a different side of the band: the surf-punk vibes we grew up with. I love Janet’s lyrics, too – this song is raw Spiderbait.”

Kram said that the idea behind this record was pretty simple: create a collection of all the unique and f***** awesome songs Janet’s written. In response, Janet said “Kram was going on about the compilation idea – and initially, I said ‘hell no’. I kinda said ‘OK’ to shut him up…  And here we are!”

Kram went on: “One of my favourite things about this record is hearing all of Janet’s songs back-to-back; it gives them a new continuity, and almost creates a solo album that exists within the context of the band. Even though it’s a compilation of old material, this is one of my favourite Spiderbait records.”

“It was really moving for me to hear the whole album once the order was finalised. There are so many different sounds and spaces… Listening to all of that, plus her beautiful voice, I heard so much of the past as if it were present. It’s like listening to a musical diary of one of my dearest friends and collaborators. This is for her.”

“I never expected that a fun thing I do with two of my best friends would become a body of work like this. Music is brilliant and creative; torturous at times, and exhilarating at others”, Janet reflected. “What an absurd, accidental, and satisfying journey it’s been for the three of us. In the 90’s, women songwriters were few and far between, and thankfully it’s not that way anymore.”

Sounds In The Key Of J is a career-spanning celebration of bass player and singer, Janet English. Fans will know her hits like ‘Calypso’, ‘Footy’, ‘Glokenpop’ and ‘F***** Awesome’, but it’s all the other rarer tracks on this album that make it special.

The record will be available digitally and on a 2LP with a double front cover, and features previously unreleased tracks and old B-Sides.
